I agree largely, mainly fully, with your review. I'd actually fancy seeing it again as there were so many levels on which I felt deeply moved. Tears choked me when Toots climbed into John's lap, delivered her gift and told him that she loved him.

As Fanny said about the beginning of 'Endymion', I can't imagine one word, one image, one tone, one shade that could have made this film any more Perfect.

I'm glad we saw it. In many ways the depth at which it all ran, the seeming inevitability, the unbreaking bonds, his handsome young face and dark heavy brow, felt rich with touches of you.

"The story with the “Redux” was that the original negative had been damaged or lost or something, and Wong Kaw-Wai had long wished to have either re-edited or represented his film"

In an interview with WKW and Doyle, they offered basically this story:

The studio that financed Ashes went under, and the only complete archival 35mm print was lost forever. The recut was intended to be restorative, and not a major change. But when they wound up unable to find a full print, they had to reassemble the film from prints they found at theaters, many of which were radically different from one another, which posed limitations that inspired them to re-think the film.

Besides that, I relate to your mixed feelings about WKW. He seems to have stagnated a bit since ITMFL.

I thought it was heavily influenced by a William Gibson style story line, Neuromancer - but instead of a heady cyber-landscape, they were literally into my head ... it is inner space - the mind, the collective-conciousness. Jung would have had a fieldday with the interconnectivity of the human condition.

I liked Popgirl -- the bad watcher who watched Cassie. She was kinda pulp fictiony and had a good eye candy appeal. The whole Hong Kong scenery was fantastic.

There was a 70's Prog rock band called Klaatu I used to enjoy. Wonder what happened to them. I will defintely watch this Keanu/Klaatu remake no matter how bad it is because of my love for the original. The Terminator/Keanu correlation is right on the mark. How about the christness of the Kwizzatz-Hadderach of Dune? It's funny how we all need a christ. Thanks again for the thoughtful writing.

The father ... Oh Ken, something broke in me when I saw that. This really was the hardest movie I've ever watched. I had put the movie on pause because I just couldn't take it. I was trying to make myself watch the end when my guys came home. I don't think I will finish it. Thoughts of hunting (the "priest" and cardinal) down and bringing that poor man their hearts in a gift box come to mind. I have just never seen that kind of pain and betrayal expressed like that before. I want to take the "America's Most Wanted" guy (Walsh?) and rub his nose in that man's pain and say "See? This is what you are supposed to feel!" not make a career out of your child's death. I think I'm swearing off the documentaries for a while. Truly fucking horrific.

I view this film as one of the role-models of Film Noire. Something that amazed me when I saw it was that there were a number of scenes that I had seen already - sampled as they were into metal videos and such.

The influence, the technique, the angular use of light - I was intrigued. It's probably time to watch it again.
