Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
(2001) dir. Simon West
What should one expect from a film adapted from a video game?
Maybe this question shows that my knowledge of video games is a little dated. I know that narratives in some adventure games have gotten very sophisticated, perhaps more well-realized than in a traditional theatrical film.
But this film is essentially Indiana Jones with tits and ass, maybe more fantasy elements, definitely more post-Matrix ass-kicking.
But story? Who needs story?
Well, I think this film could have used some. It was so lacking in depth, so pre-packaged, so unoriginal, that it didn’t do a thing for me.
Maybe, next time, I will play the video game first and ask questions later.
